Year-End Photo Organizing: 5 Easy Steps

It is mid-October, and the end of the year is quickly approaching. I personally love this time of year - the colors, the temperatures, the festive smells. However, I’m not a fan of the shorter days; but… these shorter days do give us the perfect opportunity to hunker down and tackle some in-home projects. What better time than now to spend a little time with your device (even though I usually don’t endorse more screen time) and create some structure in your camera roll?

Below, I’m listing five simple things you can do every day for the rest of the month to bring order to your camera roll. These are easy tasks you can tackle in just 30 minutes while relaxing on the couch, maybe even watching your favorite show. And if you enjoy the process, you can keep it going. But for now, I’m suggesting you focus solely on your 2024 photos and do this until the end of the month.

5 Things to Do with Your Photos Before the End of the Year:

HEART – Identify your all-time favorite photos from the year. That’s it! Easy-peasy. You can do this on your phone or sit down at your computer to go through them.

DELETE – I can’t stress this enough: DELETE – DELETE – DELETE. Yes, you CAN delete photos (you have 30 days to change your mind!). Seriously, get rid of your junk photos. Homecoming pictures? Do you really need 15 of the same group shot? Probably not. Delete the extras.

JOT DOWN THE IMPORTANT STUFF – Capturing details is getting easier, especially on an iPhone. Follow these steps:

1. Take a photo

2. Open the photo and click the ‘i’ at the bottom of the screen

3. Click in the ‘Caption’ field

4. Tap the microphone in the bottom right corner and speak your caption

5. Hit ‘Done’.

CREATE – Take the photos you ‘hearted’ and put them into a holiday card, calendar, or a 2024 Highlights book.

SHARE – Create a Shared Album and send your favorites to family and friends. They’d love to see photos from earlier in the year.

Photo maintenance brings us joy.

Doing a little maintenance on your photos can be a fun and enjoyable process. It doesn’t need to be daunting, and it definitely doesn’t have to take hours and hours.

For example, I just finished pulling together our 2024 calendar. I dropped all my favorite photos into a new project in the Photos app, chose a template, and selected 3-7 photos for each month. I’m already done through October! Come December, I’ll place my order and have the calendar delivered in early January. How fun is that?

What will you create with your favorite photos?

Whether it’s a calendar, a holiday card, or a simple shared album, taking these small steps now will set you up for a more organized and meaningful collection of memories in the coming year. And who knows, you might even enjoy the process enough to make it an annual tradition!

Happy organizing, and here’s to preserving your favorite moments!
