Preserving Legacy Through Photos: a Heartfelt Project Proposal

In March, I had the privilege of being approached by a retired CEO with a deeply personal request. She wanted to gather all of her photos from every imaginable source. Her story resonated with me on a profound level, and I felt compelled to help her by preparing a detailed proposal for this important project.

The Background

Here are some key details about this incredible project:

-          Terminal illness

-          Children in their 20s

-          Photos scattered across various media: CDs, SD cards, flip camera, external hard drive, and Shutterfly.

-          Movies on 8 mm cassettes, VHS tapes, and DVDs

-          Apple Photos

-          Bins of printed photos that needed scanning

The Mission

The urgency of consolidating these memories into one safe place became evident. These images, fragile and susceptible to the ravages of time—heat, moisture, breakage—were at risk of being lost forever. The primary goal of the proposal was to ensure that these precious memories would not just survive but thrive, accessible and cherished by her children, who might have never seen many of these photos.

The Emotional Impact

This project was about more than just photos. It was about preserving a legacy. Her children would be able to see, remember, and relive the happy moments of their childhood. This is a normal collection by today's standards, yet it holds extraordinary significance. If you’re in your 50s, like me, you likely have a similar collection: boxes and bins of photos, old albums, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, SD cards, and now digital images on platforms like iCloud, Google, and Amazon.

Our photos are everywhere, but this client's situation was particularly poignant. With a terminal illness, her priority was to preserve these memories for her adult children. Included in this collection were video "notes" to her children—messages of wisdom, love, encouragement, and guidance for a future when she will no longer be here. The thought of these heartfelt messages is deeply moving.

The Significance of the Photo HUB

Creating a Photo HUB and all the work included in the gathering and digitizing of photos and videos is about more than just organizing family photos from the past 30 years. It’s about giving her children a tangible piece of their history, their story, their mother’s legacy. To me, this project is incredibly special and meaningful. It’s a mother, in her remaining time, taking the effort to ensure her legacy is neatly preserved for her children to cherish and enjoy.

A Gift Beyond Measure

In the end, what better gift can she give them? This collection is more than just photos and videos. It’s a lifetime of memories, emotions, and connections preserved. It’s her voice and presence on screen, guiding and loving them even when she’s gone. This project celebrates the profound impact of preserving memories and the deep love of a parent for their children. It’s a testament to the enduring power of family, love, and legacy.
