Save Your Photos Month: Preserving Memories for Future Generations
Think about the moments you capture in your photos. These images represent significant memories - your daughter's first birthday, your son’s high school graduation, a family vacation, a Bar Mitzvah, a wedding. Imagine the heartache of losing these moments. For many of us, photos are our way of storytelling. They allow us to document and share our lives with others. However, when these photos are disorganized and scattered, sharing our stories becomes a daunting task.
The Stories Behind the Photos
When I look at family photos, I don't just see faces; I see stories. For instance, a photo of the backs of my kids may seem like an unnecessary picture, but to me, it's a snapshot of a difficult time in our lives when we were navigating the new world during a global pandemic. Seated here, my kids are e-learning—something that the world didn’t know how to do when it first started in March of 2020. We figured out how to Zoom, how to create “classroom” space in our family room, and how to stay focused while staring at a screen for six hours a day.
Most of our photos might not depict a global pandemic. Instead, they capture everyday moments—celebrations, vacations, and simple joys. These seemingly ordinary moments weave together the rich tapestry of our family histories. Preserving these memories is vital, not just for us but for future generations.
What is Save Your Photos Month?
Save Your Photos Month, first launched in 2014 by The Photo Managers (formerly the Association of Personal Photo Organizers), is an annual initiative that lasts throughout September. This community-driven initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving personal photos and documents.
The Photo Managers, professional photo organizers, and many of our partners host a variety of engaging activities. You can enjoy free educational classes led by top experts, listen to insightful interviews with industry leaders, and hear inspiring stories from people just like you. These events, available both in-person and online, are designed to make you aware of the importance of protecting your photos, videos, and treasured items against threats like extreme weather events and changing technology while taming the overwhelming volume of digital content we produce daily.
